August 2011 / September 2011 article

Growing up in Gainesville, I was practically born a Gator fan. In some towns across America, the new year starts in January, but here in Gainesville all things are reborn in the months of August and September when the start of the new school year signals a new season of traffic and football games.

The garden, also reflecting the need for renewal, looks a little like it needs an overhaul at this time of the year. Now is a great time to put in plants and have some fun injecting a little orange and blue into the landscape. I used to shy away from the color orange, being a devotee of English garden design with all of its uses of subtle color combinations, but the warm summer sun favors warm colors.

I find myself being drawn towards bold selections like this new marigold called Moon Song Deep Orange which can reach two-feet tall and have blooms up to eight-inches wide. There is still time to plant these from seed along with blue salvias for your game-day garden. Blue is a rare color to find in nature, but glazed pottery can bring a true blue color into your landscape without being overstated.

Try pairing the silver-blue spikes of agave with cobalt pottery for a drought-tolerant landscape accent. Orange is definitely on the menu in this rose garden we created here in Gainesville. The secret to roses in Florida is selecting varieties that are resistant to insects and diseases so that chemicals are not needed. We refurbished this garden with a dressing of composted worm castings to bring the plants into bloom naturally.
